A Bokuto seminar is confirmed in June at Watford Leisure Centre Central, taught by our kancho, Paul Budden sensei.
Content: Nihon kendo kata, application and koryu (old schools), as well as the Kihon keiko-ho and the links between them, together with the skills that reinforce the understanding of shinai kendo, will be studied and analysed in depth.
Budden sensei studied Ono-ha Itto-ryu under Ono Torao sensei in Tokyo and has studied Mizoguchi-ha Itto-ryu under Ozawa Hiroshi for over a decade. He is the author of several books, including ‘Looking at A Far Mountain – A Study of Kendo Kata’, ‘ Devil’s Gloves and the One Cut: An Introduction to Ono-ha Itto-ryu’. Through his long experience and perception of the subject matter, he has prepared the following schedule:
  • An understanding of Kendo kata and essential riai.
  • The essence of the Ono-ha Itto-ryu focusing on kiriotoshi.
  • Mizoguchi-ha Itto-ryu and its techniques with specific diagonal body movements left and right ‘Sayu Tenka Deba-no Hidachi (or left and right secret ‘deba’ techniques)’ and the physics of cutting.
  • Using original film footage, a study of the Teikoku kendo kata and its relationship to the Nihon kendo kata.
  • The Bokuto kihon shinai waza interpreted as sword techniques.
Attendees will also learn basic etiquette in the handling of bokuto and fundamentals such as understanding distance through practical application.
