Unlike in free practice (<em>jigeiko<\/em>), where <em>seme <\/em>is expressed dynamically through attack and reaction, in kata it manifests subtly through\u00a0<strong>posture, maai (distance), kiai (spirit), and metsuke (gaze)<\/strong>. Each step, each posture, and each movement carries the\u00a0<strong>silent pressure of initiative<\/strong>, challenging the opponent to respond. In Ipponme, for example, the\u00a0<em>uchidachi<\/em>\u2019s forward intent applies seme before the cut, and the\u00a0<em>shidachi<\/em>\u00a0learns to sense it, timing their movement perfectly. In essence, kata becomes more than a set of movements \u2014 it becomes a\u00a0<strong>training ground for the mind and spirit<\/strong>, teaching practitioners to\u00a0<strong>feel and project seme even without physical contact<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u><\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><strong>What <em>seme <\/em>means in Kendo<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Seme (<\/strong><strong>\u653b\u3081<\/strong><strong>)<\/strong>\u00a0=\u00a0<em>pressure, initiative, or the act of breaking the opponent\u2019s spirit or guard before striking.<\/em><br \/>It\u2019s not just physical; it\u2019s\u00a0<strong>mental and spiritual dominance<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 the feeling of \u201cI will strike, and you cannot stop me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0<strong>kata<\/strong>, that\u00a0<em>inner intention<\/em>\u00a0(\u6c17\u4f4d\u00a0<em>kigai<\/em>, \u6c17\u8feb\u00a0<em>kihaku<\/em>) is always present \u2014 even though the form is predetermined.<\/p>\n<h3><strong><em>Seme<\/em><\/strong><strong> in Kendo no Kata<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In the\u00a0<strong>Nihon Kend\u014d Kata<\/strong>,\u00a0<em>seme<\/em>\u00a0appears through:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Kamae (<\/strong><strong>\u69cb\u3048<\/strong><strong>)<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 correct posture and spirit.<\/li>\n<ul>\n<li>Each person must project readiness and pressure toward the opponent.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<li><strong>Maai (<\/strong><strong>\u9593\u5408\u3044<\/strong><strong>)<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 distance control.<\/li>\n<ul>\n<li>The\u00a0<em>uchidachi<\/em>\u00a0(teacher side) and\u00a0<em>shidachi<\/em>\u00a0(student side) subtly invade or maintain space through movement.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<li><strong>Kiai and Metsuke (<\/strong><strong>\u6c17\u5408\u3068\u76ee\u4ed8\u3051<\/strong><strong>)<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 spirit and gaze.<\/li>\n<ul>\n<li>Eyes, breath, and mental energy direct force at the opponent \u2014 the invisible\u00a0<em>seme<\/em>\u00a0line.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<li><strong>Tame (<\/strong><strong>\u6e9c\u3081<\/strong><strong>)<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 the moment of spiritual compression before action.<\/li>\n<ul>\n<li>You can feel\u00a0<em>seme<\/em>\u00a0most clearly right before\u00a0<em>uchidachi<\/em>\u00a0initiates the cut and\u00a0<em>shidachi<\/em>\u00a0responds.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><strong>Examples of <em>seme<\/em> in specific kata<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Ipponme (first kata):<\/strong><br \/><em>Uchidachi<\/em>\u00a0applies\u00a0<em>seme<\/em>\u00a0forward from\u00a0<em>j\u014ddan<\/em>, forcing\u00a0<em>shidachi<\/em>\u00a0to respond by taking the correct timing to counter.<br \/>\u2192 The\u00a0<em>seme<\/em>\u00a0here is\u00a0<strong>vertical pressure<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 strong intent from above.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sanbonme (third kata):<\/strong><br \/>Both sides press inward;\u00a0<em>shidachi\u2019s<\/em>\u00a0counter relies on sensing\u00a0<em>uchidachi\u2019s<\/em>\u00a0spiritual and physical\u00a0<em>seme<\/em>\u00a0to find the instant of opening (<em>suki<\/em>).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Nanahonme (seventh kata):<\/strong><br \/>A subtle psychological battle \u2014 each step forward carries\u00a0<em>seme<\/em>\u00a0in posture, eyes, and breathing, long before the cut.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>In short<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><em>Yes \u2014 seme exists in kata, but it is internal rather than reactive.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In jigeiko,\u00a0<em>seme<\/em>\u00a0manifests dynamically to create a strike.<br \/>In kata,\u00a0<em>seme<\/em>\u00a0manifests through\u00a0<strong>spirit, posture, gaze, and breathing<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 a silent dialogue of intent.<\/p>\n<p>As many sensei say:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithout\u00a0<em>seme<\/em>, kata is only movement.
